These things are GREAT, whether you entertain others, or fly solo!Jan 09, 2007

My initiation into the use of butter bells began with a full-size butter bell that holds 1/2 cup, or one full stick, of butter, but considering that it's just me, I never went through a full stick of butter on my own.
I saw these baby butter bells initially in a local high-end discount store, and snagged them as soon as I saw them (especially at the price I got them for!), and have been searching for more EVER since! The four that I got first time around were great, but they only made me want to have one for everyone that I intend on ever entertaining at a large dinner party. So, now I've got twelve! These are great if you're single, and only want a small amount of soft, room temperature butter around to tempt you, or if you intend on entertaining a large group of people - having individual portions of soft butter around DOES make all the difference! And with the way any of these butter bell crocks work, there's no more reason to worry about your butter going rancid on you. Just add a little salt to the bottom half of the crock to prevent the possibility of any mold growth, then fill the bottom third of the crock (that's just enough water to bring the water level near the top of the closed crock). Cold water is best, since it will keep the butter from melting outright, and plopping out of the bell and into the crock's bottom half. Change the water once a week, and that's all it takes to have soft, fresh butter all the time!
The packaging will tell you that these baby bells don't require the water that the larger ones do, but I just feel safer doing it this way, and it also prevents me feeling compelled to use all of the butter in the baby bell in one sitting. If you find a white residue on the outside of your bell after it's sat for a few days, it's most likely simply the salt making its way through the clay (probably by way of a tiny crack in the glaze, since there's always a chance of that). I also find it easier to fill my butter bells with softened, room-temperature butter. If you refrigerate these after filling, though, be aware of the possibility of the cold slightly shrinking the butter, and allowing the butter to drop out of the crock's inverted lid over time. It'll be in the shape of the lid's interior, and perfectly preserved, but getting it to hold in the bell once it's fallen out is not likely to happen.
If you're a foodie like me, these butter bells, large or small, are definitely the way to go!

By ChiDana I live alone so I was looking for a butter bell that would hold a reasonable amount of butter for one person. These are obviously intended for individual use at a dinner party or single sitting. They honestly only held about a tablespoon of butter. I held onto them in case I throw a dinner party that would require individual servings, but I had to go to L'Tremain's website to find a middle sized bell that holds about a half stick of butter.
