Description:

Known as a pristine coffeemaker, Chemex employs all of the chemically correct methods for brewing. Its hourglass shaped flask is made entirely of glass, a chemically inert material that does not absorb odors or chemical residues. The Chemex has no moving parts and will work forever, unless it is dropped or in some other way demolished. Chemex filters are made of the highest quality filter paper. Please note: All of the coffeemakers are measured using 5 oz. as 1 cup. This Chemex coffeemaker has a sturdy glass handle. The Chemex Coffeemaker was invented over 60 years ago by German chemist and artist, Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. The simplicity of the Chemex coffeemaker's elegant hourglass shape has been honored for its design by many prestigious museums, including the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Its functional capabilities are also world-renowned. The Chemex uses a thick paper filter that removes many of the impurities that electric makers allow to pass through, making the coffee much more pure and flavorful. It also brews directly into the serving container for simple decanting and cleaning.

Features:

The same beautiful hourglass carafe that distinguishes Chemex® Coffeemaker paired with a graceful but sturdy glass handle.

30 oz. (Makes 2 to 6 five ounce cups).

5Great coffee makerApr 04, 2010
By M. Guilfoyle
I am very pleased with this product. I have been eyeing it for awhile, mostly as an alternative to the drip we use daily for reasons of getting away from plastic. I am glad I waited because the new design with the handle is wonderful--the coffee pours easily and gracefully.

Some things to be ready for, though--it does take about three to four rounds of pouring the boiling water over the coffee grounds while waiting for it to drip, and the glass container cools fairly quickly. I was also concerned that the extra steps of boiling the water and pouring it through would be too much in the morning as opposed to filling up the drip machine and hitting the switch, but I find that I actually like the ritual of preparing coffee with the Chemex (and I am not a morning person). Also, I found that pre-heating the Chemex with hot tap water for a few minutes while waiting for the coffee water to boil makes a lot of difference, and then once the coffee is brewed, I pour it all into a stainless steel carafe or thermos to keep it hot. The coffee is so good that any leftover at the end of the day, either re-heated or iced, is delicious. The six-cup is perfect for one to two enthusiastic coffee drinkers. I highly recommend!

4Glad I Got ItApr 28, 2010

So far I like the Chemex a lot. Best coffee I've made in a l-o-n-g time and it's nice not to have to worry about water leaking out of the bottom of my old coffee maker any more! I'd much rather heat the water separately than go through that again. -- The glass is on the thicker side, but I do worry about breaking it. I debated between this size and the smaller one, but am glad I went with this one. Even though I usually only make a cup or two of coffee at a time, it's nice to know I can make more if I want to.

5Makes a great cup of coffeeMay 20, 2010

The chemex is a wonderful experience in making coffee. Some people think these are new, but they have been around for a looooong time. Combined with the chemex filters you will start making coffee just as good as your local brewer. Takes a little practice and a few tries to get the method correct, but in the end it is totally worth it. I prefer this handled version over the classic, just makes pouring a little bit easier.

5makes excellent coffeeMay 06, 2010

if you want a perfect cup of coffee w/o that burnt coffee tang, the chemex method is great. there's no tepid water dripping nor cooked automatic pot flavor. the chemex is also stylish and easy to keep clean.

5Easy, slow, and goodNov 01, 2010

I use the 6 cup, glass handle model and love it. I've been scaling back from a full auto espresso maker and americanos, this is a good alternative - far better than a typical automatic drip. But you probably know that if you're even reading these reviews. So, a couple things to keep in mind. The handle version is practical, yet side by side with the original model it isn't as nice looking (to me and the others around who notice them in my office). The coffee maker does not come with any filters, not even a sample. Buy filters at the same time as the maker! Yes, everyone is right, it really is rather slow making coffee this way, and it is not set and forget, you have to keep topping it up over the course of 10-15 minutes.
