Hot Peanut Butter Sandwiches in WinterJan 13, 2007
By Mycroft Sigerson
"Starwood"
I bought this, as 30 years ago my mother had a stovetop sandwich maker and she used to always make us kids, hot peanut butter sandwiches in the Winter time. The one she had came from her mother or grandmother and it was solid steel. This Diablo sandwich maker is not as solid but it is does have a non-stick coating, so butter on the outside of the sandwiches is not needed (unless there is a concern about burning bread). My 2 biggest complaints would be that the size could have been a little bigger (good size for square breads). For larger size bread, the Diablo cuts the edges off upon closing. The 2nd complaint is that Diablo is imprinted on every sandwich. I perfer no advertizing on my sandwiches. Overall it works fine and so far no cooking problems.

FantasticJan 13, 2009
By pj1402 Fantastic piece of kit. Makes great toasties & really easy to clean. The problem with electric toasted sandwich makers is the cleaning, so you use them a couple of times and then they get pushed to the back of the cupboard, never to see the light of day again. Not this one it really is great, and so easy to use that it will get used. The end product is also very tasty.

Beware of cheap hingeJan 14, 2012
By MARK S RANDALL I ordered this item after remembering the delicious little round grilled cheese sandwiches from childhood that were made by a similar looking device. I always loved the way it sealed the edges of the bread, turning an ordinary cheese sandwich into a mini grilled cheese "pie". All golden and crusty on the outside, gooey, warm and melty on the inside. Amazing when served with a cup of tomato soup! The day it arrived I opened the box, took a look at it and noticed that it seemed a little ...flimsy. Especially where the two halves of the sandwich maker hinged together. I remembered the only one-star review of this item on Amazon that warned, "It is constructed with two poorly designed cotter pins that fall out... making the product useless" and how I ignored this review and ordered it anyway. Now it was here and I was ready to use it for the very first time! I sprayed a little Pam on the inside, made a sandwich (nothing fancy first time out of the gate: a slice of cheddar cheese between two slices of lightly buttered sourdough bread) I placed it in the center of the device, closed the two halves together. trimmed the excess bread away and immediately noticed that somehow one of the "poorly designed cotter pins" had already popped out. I managed to find it and I screwed it back in. I turned on the stove top and held the sandwich maker a few inches above the heat, turning it over every now and then to make sure it was toasted evenly. After about 3 or 4 minutes I decided to open the device slightly to see if it was done and thats when the two halves completely separated, dropping the piping hot sandwich and one half of the device onto the stovetop with a loud crash and the other half of the sandwich maker crashing to the floor. I looked briefly for the 2 tiny little screws that had quietly popped out during the heating process but couldn't find them. I promptly threw what remained of this dangerous cheap-o device into the trash. "What about the sandwich?" you may ask? "OMG! It was soooo freakin' good!"

Excellent product!Jan 30, 2012
By Randomfoodie No mess, no burning, very easy to use and amazingly holds tons of filling. My pies came out perfect every time and they were delicious! This product should go mainstream in all the department stores. Definitely a winner!

A bit of nostalgia and YUMMMYNov 15, 2011
By Sky Sox Wiz In the '50's we had an aluminum pie maker which we loved. The DIABLO pie maker is a good modern-day version of this. Definitely NOT for an open campfire or even a fireplace it is best on a stovetop. The shorter handles are better suited to this kind of use. The wire closer latch seems pretty flimsy and the quite short handles can get dangerously hot if you don 't keep your hands back from the metal part. All in all its an adequate tool at the price. I would keep the following in mind if you buy: 1. NOT for camping or fireplaces, no way. 2. Handles can get hot.....use hotpads or gloves. 3. Your imagination will create all kinds of yummy goodies with the Diablo. Its' little horns are cute.
