3Functions, but not what I expected...Jan 29, 2009
By tennis player
I owe the Kuhn Epicurean all-stainless garlic press and love it. My mother was visiting recently and was impressed with it, but found it a bit hard to squeeze and thought it was better suited to a larger hand. My 12-year old daughter, who likes to cook, made the same remark.

I wanted to give my mother a garlic press, and thus, this "Easy-Squeeze" unit seemed ideal. However, we found it no easier to squeeze than the Epicurean. Furthermore, the red handles are plastic and not as brightly colored or shiny as the online image suggests. The press has a flimsy or squishly feeling relative to the Epicurean. As we're squeezing, you can feel the handles bend, as well as wobble slightly side-to-side.

It still presses garlic beautifully. The actual pressing mechanism and screen are made of the same high-quality stainless steel as in the Epicurean. It is just as easy to clean.

For the price ($19.95 vs. $39.95), this easy-squeeze unit may be a good deal, but we much prefer the heft and solid feeling of the Epicurean. We feel like the Epicurean will last a lifetime and don't mind spending the extra money. However, with the easy-squeeze, the question for me is not IF it will fail, but WHEN?

We've only used it one day, so maybe I'm worrying about something that will never happen. However, I intend to return this press and give my mother the Epicurean instead.

5KUHN RIKON Garlic PressJul 08, 2008
By Eva "mellow1304"
I had and broke few garlic presses in last few years. We love to cook and garlic is a must in our kitchen. This press is the best I ever had. The egronomic handles are much easier to squeez then all the other (much more expensive) presses I had. And the stainless steel sieve swings out for cleaning - now, that is smart! I highly recommend it, it is very good product. It also works well with fresh ginger.

it is now a year later and the press is still working as new. GREAT!

1Very DisappointedAug 06, 2009
By AnonyMouse
We've been ordering from Amazon for over 6 years, and the Kuhn Rikon Easy-Squeeze Garlic Press marks the first time we've ever had the occasion to take advantage of Amazon's terrific return policy.

I cook a lot, and most of my dishes include a generous amount of garlic. For years, I had the Zyliss garlic press, and was very pleased with it. Over the years, the cutting surface on it wore, and it became harder and harder to crush garlic, so I started shopping for another press. After careful research (I love Amazon's Customer Reviews and never shop without them; thanks, reviewers!), I decided on the Kuhn Rikon.

What I found was that it was *much* harder to operate, requiring a great deal more strength than my old Zyliss. Crushing two average-sized garlic cloves required both hands and three separate "squeeze-attempts". After all of the effort, I was left with much larger pieces of garlic than I had gotten with the Zyliss which were clearly visible in my marinara.

I had particularly been sold on the "swing-out basket" construction, which I felt would make it very easy to clean. Unfortunately, the wider holes plugged much more than my old press requiring me to scrape the residue out with my fingernails under hot running water. The next day, I packed it up and returned it. Then I sat down and ordered a new Zyliss.

A note on Amazon's return policy; I found it was easier to return this to Amazon than it would have been if I had bought this in a brick-and-mortar! Amazon even printed out a shipping label with all pertinent information barcoded on it. Easy!

Final score: Kuhn Rikon: 0, Amazon: 5

3[Updated Dec 29, 2010] Cook's Illustrated was right yet again!Nov 13, 2009

[Update Dec 29, 2010]
I have had this for a little over a year now, and I'm disappointed to report back that this tool has already broken. There is a pin that connects the two arms together, and it fell out. It seems to be like a dumbbell that has the ends screwed on, and one of the ends fell off (have no idea where). I used this about one to two times a week, mincing only 3-4 cloves during each use. I don't consider that to be extreme use, and I'm a home cook, so it's not like this is being used in a commercial environment. This time around I'm going to shell out the extra bucks and try the metal one that CI recommends. I downgraded to 3 stars because of its lack of longevity, but when it was working, it worked very well.

[Original review]
I purchased this press because my metal Oxo press cracked by the hopper rendering it inoperable. Anytime I replace a piece of equipment in my kitchen, I try to purchase one recommended by CI. And after reading some of the Amazon reviews, I was a bit skeptical of CI's recommendations. Although I use garlic quite a bit and I am an avid home cook, I wasn't ready to commit to a Rolls Royce garlic peeler. I figured even if this didn't work too well, it was an inexpensive investment.

I've only used the press for a few weeks now, so I can't comment on its long-term durability. However, its ease of use is far superior to that of my old Oxo. I never realized, before using this press, just how much I struggled with the Oxo. I used to have to double the amount of garlic called for in a recipe using my old Oxo because most of the garlic would stay in the hopper. With this new press, I'm amazed by how much garlic I actually get. Yes, it does "give" quite a bit in your hand, but I agree with other reviewers in that this is part of the design. My old Oxo was very rigid and the plunger never got all the way to the bottom of the hopper. With the "give" in this press, you get every last little tidbit out.

Should I find with repeated use that this press can't stand up to an everyday home cook, I will update this review accordingly. In the meantime, I've given four stars because I really like it and am quite hopeful that it will last. I don't want to give five stars because I'm not sure at this point whether it warrants such a rating.

5A kitchen favorite - Terrific jobMar 06, 2009

After pinching my hand a couple of times with the all steel Kuhn press, I decided to try this easy press version. The actual pressing mechanism is identical to it's heftier cousin but at full press these handles do not completely close so it cannot hurt you. I did side by side comparisons of the pressed garlic. Output is also identical as is ease of cleaning since the mechanisms are the same. This one also sells for FAR less. We reach for this all the time.

The all steel versionKuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press is also a very good press - it is just very heavy (nearly 3/4 pound), expensive and better suited to larger tougher hands than mine.
