Made from durable stoneware or dolomite clays, the Butter Bell crocks will safely keep butter fresh and spreadable without refrigeration, odors or spoilage. The Butter Bell's unique design enhances butter's delicate flavor, while providing a practical and decorative solution for storing and serving butter. It keeps butter at the perfect "spreading" consistency by reflecting outside heat while insulating and cooling the butter. Flavor and freshness is protected by an airtight seal of water at the base of the crock. Water should be changed out every three days and replaced with fresh, cold water. Store the crock away from heat or sunlight. To use, firmly pack softened butter into the bell-shaped lid, pour cold water into the base of the crock and place the lid upside down back into the base of the crock. In the classic tradition of dinnerware found in Parisian bistros and brasseries, Le Bistro Bell Butter Bell crock is glazed in a creamy white color with rich red banding around the edges and bottom. I had been wanting a Butter Bell for a long time, and settled on this one. We like to keep our butter out on the counter without having it melt in the hot kitchen during the summer. This item keeps the butter nicely spreadable all year long.
You do have to remember to change the water every 2-3 days, but I just do it when I wipe my counter off. It keeps the butter covered too, which is a must in a house with cats who like to lick the butter.
I'm thinking of getting some for gifts. Nice item and I highly recommend it.
I have add some comments after 11 months of using this. The glaze is cracking and wearing off in spots. The pottery is looking stained, as if the moisture is getting under the glaze. For the price, I expected this item to last longer than 11 months. I'm concerned about bacteria growing in the cracks in the glaze and expect to stop using this item.

This is our second Butter Bell as I chipped my first. But after 4 years of use by a family with small children, that was impressive to me! I chose the crock with a spreader this time. I will NOT do that again. Once you use the spreader and put it back in it's handy little hook, butter is now on your spreader and the crock. I have to wash the crock and the spreader after each use (or at least wipe down.) But overall - I LOVE BUTTER BELLS!!! I always have fresh, spreadable butter on hand. No fake, bad for you, wanna-be butters. Butter is healthy and these crocks help you use it well!

I was a bit skeptical about leaving butter out all day in this crock. However, I gave it a try and it's wonderful. I think the cold water is what makes the butter stay fresh all day. I've been using it now for a month, and my butter stays a pretty creamy color (no nasty dark yellow stuff), and it's fresh and creamy each time I use it. Soft butter is so much nicer than hard butter!
