Love OXO, but not this scoop....Jan 02, 2005

I am a big fan of OXO produts and all they've done to make cookware so easy to handle. But this product has a problem with the non-stick coating.
Although the scoop's design is great and it handles well, the coating on my scoop has begun to peel after only 6 mos. of use. And I don't really need teflon in my super fudge chunk, thank you very much.

Updated version without NS coating is one of the best scoops on the market!Aug 14, 2010

I did not buy this from Amazon, but I had used the original OXO i-series scoop for years, but after reading the reviews here I realized how easily the non-stick coating finish was coming off (you could just scratch it off with your fingernail, gross). Replaced it with the updated version that is made from polished aluminum without the coating, and I'm happy as a clam! The design of this scoop is superb! The point and thin edges of the scoop cuts into hard ice cream like butter, and the nice heft of the scoop helps there as well. The rubberized handle is super comfy, and the release mechanism is effective and durable (unlike those trigger scoops with thin metal piece that slides under the ice cream). Thick, sturdy neck assures that it will not bend or snap off between the handle and the head.
Even though they removed the non-stick coating, ice cream usually does not stick to the scoop, and if it needs a little help, the trigger is there to eject the ice cream from the scoop. Scoop clean up is pretty easily, but note that it is hand wash only, and those words are etched onto the back of the scoop to remind you. For some ice creams with cookie/cake/brownie ingredients, make sure you also clean behind the release plate with a brush to make sure nothing gets stuck there. Don't bother with the other OXO ice cream scoop models, this one (updated version) is the best!
Update Aug 22, 2010: I had contacted OXO to clarify the material of the scoop, and they informed me it is polished aluminum not steel, and I have corrected my review accordingly. A couple quick tests also seems to confirm this. However, my rating still remains at 5 stars, as while I would stay away from aluminum containers and cookware that would contact food longer and/or in combination with heat, aluminum utensils are confirmed as safe from multiple sources.

FINALLY, a scoop that actually won't break!Jan 16, 2004
This is really a heavy duty ice cream scoop. I have broken so many and this one will be around for a long time. It glides through frozen ice cream easily (even better if you run it under hot water for a couple seconds). There is a little "button" to push the ice cream out of the scoop if it doesn't slide out. I love it and highly recommend it!

The design is great but the coating peels off easily. Avoid.Dec 03, 2008

As are most Oxo products, this scoop is easy to use but unfortunatly the coating peeled off within a few months even though we always hand washed it. Unless you like flakes in your ice cream, avoid this one.

non-stick coating flakes offDec 02, 2007
By Kiddos mom I have many OXO products in my kitchen and will continue to buy them, but the non-stick coating on this one started to flake off (and into the ice cream). I tossed this one and am buying a different one.
