3Not up to the OXO standard.Aug 29, 2004
By M. E. Volmar
Overall, this is a sturdy, handy and attractive can opener with a built-in bottle opener for pop-top caps. Its sharp teeth and beveled blade bite into lids of all sizes with ease. Its ergonomic design and big, pressure-absorbing, outstanding non-slip grips allow you comfortable, daily use. Its large, easy-to-turn knob and hefty body that fit comfortably into your hands, make it require less force to operate than other, more traditional openers do, keeping you away from cramped hands and other tension related injuries. Its elegant, stylized, standard OXO shape will fit perfectly with the rest of your OXO utensils in the kitchen or in the bar.
But, unlike the rest of the products from the OXO Good Grips line, this one is not such a great value and it is below the established standards of superior quality, unsurpassed durability and flawless performance of the OXO brand.
While most of its metal parts are stainless-steel some others are not, like the screws holding the blade and the teeth, and will begin to rust after a couple of years of normal, everyday use. Also, the rubber grips are glued, and will change from "fixed" to "removable" after just a few months of function. Moreover, although it is manually easy to clean, it is also advertised as dishwasher-safe, but it retains water inside the grips after they have become unglued and also inside the large hollow of the knob, making it impossible to retrieve from the dishwasher without getting drenched or making a mess.
After submitting this product to two years of normal use, mine will soon be replaced.

This was a great can opener...until it rusted. The gears ceased turning. But I liked it enough to replace it with the stainless version.

1Worked great for six months, now it's a bummerJun 26, 2000

This was a great can opener for the first six months, and now it would be faster and more efficient for us to chew the can lids off. I went back to my old, rusty from-the-dawn-of-time opener, which still works great but looks terrible until I can find a decent replacement. The Oxo still looks fantastic...in the back of the drawer.

4Could be better...Jan 26, 2005
By H. Grove "Errant Dreams Reviews"
The OXO can opener isn't that different in basic design from any other manual can opener. You close the blade-and-gear assembly over the edge of a can, grasp the handles, and turn the crank-thingie. The can opener goes around the edge of the can and cuts the lid free from the can.

The good: It's a can opener, and it works like a can opener. It cuts lids off just fine. Certainly it does its job. The handles are those wonderful thick soft rubber OXO handles, which are great for hands with arthritis or tendonitis. The crank is large as well, although plastic not rubber, giving plenty of leverage and failing to dig into sensitive skin or tendons. The opener is easy to use and easy on the hands.

The bad: This is a normal opener, not a safety-opener; this means you still have to be careful of sharp edges on the cans. We've had a bit of rusting on an inside knob of our opener, although thankfully not in a place where it will get into food when we use it on a can. And sometimes the blade jumps the track, coming loose from the can and needing to be re-locked onto the can.

Once again OXO has put some great thought into making an ordinary kitchen item easier on hurt hands, but they haven't quite made the item hold up in other ways. This seems to be a theme with their products, in our experience at least. I for one wouldn't mind paying an extra dollar or two in order to get something that would last longer and wouldn't break down.

2Bad "Good Grips"Jul 07, 2000

This can opener worked great for about 6/7 months and then quit. It said it was dishwasher safe, but it rusted. Even WD-40 couldn't help. Don't buy this one - unless it for a gift for someone you don't like.
