2I can't believe ANYONE would like this!Apr 10, 2009
By Arline K.
Well, I'm shocked that there are ANY positive reviews for this gadget. If ANYBODY is the "gadget queen" in the kitchen, it's me. I own and have used the Boerner V-slicer for at least 15 years and love it, but sometimes when you just have a small, quick job to do, I thought this might qualify - so I went and bought one. I think it's terrible! First of all, the finger protector is almost unusable. The points on the underside meant to grab and hold onto the food are so shallow that they don't want to penetrate the piece of vegetable or fruit or maintain its grip on it more than one swipe across the cutter. So, I resorted to just holding the apple quarters, in this case, with my hand with plans to just not slice the last little chunk of each piece when I was getting too close to the blade. The adjusting of the cutting thickness is already a big pain as the little control/slider wants to stick at each junction, making it difficult to change the thicknesses. When sliding the apple in the downward motion, it made perfect and uniform slices. But, when you are sliding it back up (the hand motion is usually rapidly sliding the pieces of food down and then back up across the blade) - well, the food tends to sort of get caught in the returning motion on the far end of the blade. There's a little ridge or separation bet. the blade and the support so it catches the food on the upward motion, frequently "yanking" it out of your hand. This causes the food to drop away and creates a potentially dangerous environment as your hand is normally moving back & forth fast so that you could end up slicing your fingers on the way back down again across the blade before you even realize that the food fell away from your hand. Is that understandable?? Sorry, it's just dangerous and because of it's poor design, it encourages people to not use the finger protector which is an accident waiting to happen. I'm returning mine.

4Has Good and Bad PointsApr 23, 2009
By P. McCoy "Friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob"
I recently received this item and this is my very first mandoline slicer. For me, the price was decent for a beginner. However, I found the vegetable holder awkward to use, especially with the large onion I was attempting to slice. At the same time, I was delighted at how quickly I was able to slice the onion. Another downside, the food tends to get caught on the underside and, at times, during slicing, the food catches on the topside as well. Also, I thoroughly inspected the package for instructions on the care and cleaning of this mandoline and was unable to find any instructions or suggestions on the most appropriate way to care for it after use. Oxo needs to include that information.

5SlicerJan 07, 2009

Very happy with this product even though I sliced the end of my finger off soon as I took it out of the box. Be careful it is really, really sharp. Very good product for quick no fuss slicing.

5This Product is Great!!!Mar 22, 2011
By K. M. Hakes
I have used a large mandoline slicer over the years and recently wondered why someone hadn't invented a smaller one: then guess what? Oxo made the hand-held model! I have sliced cucumbers, carrots and onions with great ease. Just a personal note: This CAN be used without ending up in Urgent Care or the Emergency Room: it's called being careful with all sharp objects!

4You get what your pay forOct 08, 2010

If you are going to be using this on a daily basis, then you are sure to be disappointed. This is NOT a professional grade mandoline slicer and will not perform like one. For that daily use, go ahead and shell out the $100-200, otherwise for occasional use this will work just fine. The plastic is fairly sturdy and will hold up even when used at an incline, the blade is very sharp and the action is reliable. I also like the lock setting for general storage. I have only two wish/complaints. Another couple of settings for the blade would be nice, and I wish the prongs on the hand guard were metal so that it would "grip" the vegetable better. Otherwise the settings are good for chips and slices, and cutting the veggie in half and pressing the guard on the cut side alleviates that issue. Also, just a tip, pressing down too hard on the slicer can cause it to bend, decrease the amount of control you have, and create a semi-dangerous situation which will eventually result in a person cutting their fingers. The blade should be sharp enough to cut without excessive amounts of pressure, just like any good knife. If it isn't you probably need a new mandoline. Don't end up getting stitches like another review on a twenty dollar piece of kitchen equipment.
