 Poor Design; Not for DishwasherMar 18, 2007

The metal "tang" inside the rubber handle of this spade does not go to the end, so when you are wrenching on the thing to dig out hard ice cream, the rubber at the end will bend in your palm and you cannot get any force applied. Also, the coating on the spade does come off in the dishwasher. There IS a no dishwashing warning on it, but the point is that that is very inconvenient.

The men in our family love these. That's why I purchased four. My problem with them is that they CANNOT be put through the dishwasher. Therefor, they must be hand washed and of course, that's left to the women. Once these have been in the dishwasher they began to loose the plating.

I do like the size of the scooper, but the silver scooper part is chipping. I am still using it because I like the size & weight of it, but disapointed in the chipping. The handle & grip is nice as are the other OXO products I have bought.

The grip is very comfortable and the shovel part is nice and strong. It does the job very well. Even ice cream that is frozen very hard can be served up.
The description for this says that it is not recommended for the dishwasher. That is an understatement. I have had two of these. Each time, someone put it in the dishwashers and I only found out when I emptied it. The finish comes off pretty easily. Then it starts to corrode in the drawer between uses.
There are other products with the same problem. So, be very careful what you choose.
Why would it be designed this way? To make sure it wears out quickly?

Everyone in my family is a big fan of ice cream. We have been using OXO ice cream spades for something like 5 years now. We own 4 of these, and we think they are awesome. We have 2 in the kitchen drawer, one in the travel bin, and one at the relatives' house. This ice cream spade is very well made, and makes it SO easy to get ice cream - hard or soft - out of any size container (half gallon, pint, whatever). Every now and then, when we are visiting someone's house, we'll use a traditional ice cream scoop, and the traditional scoop just seems so difficult compared to this ice cream spade.
One reviewer noted that the metal of the spade doesn't go all the way down to the bottom of the rubber handle. This is a PLUS, not a minus. If you have really hard ice cream (like a certain famous ice cream from New Jersey with a Scandinavian name :), that extra rubber on the end is awesome. You push on the end of the spade with the heel of your hand, the rubber bends and magnifies the force of your hand to push the spade into the hard ice cream. This spade is really the only way to access hard ice cream - a regular ice cream scoop just won't do it, unless you let the ice cream sit out on the counter for a while first. With this spade, you can scoop out even the hardest ice cream, but it also works great for softer ice cream.
It is true that you can't put this ice cream spade in the dishwasher. The metal has a coating on it that doesn't survive the dishwasher (and the spade is marked as NOT dishwasher safe). We didn't notice that warning, and accidentally ruined our first OXO ice cream spade we bought several years ago by putting it in the dishwasher. But then we bought another one, because it's great. It really only takes about 5 seconds to hand-wash this ice cream spade, because it's such a simple shape. The hand-washing is really no big deal.
I just ordered 4 more of these ice cream spades to keep in storage on reserve, because visitors to our house ask about them, and I'm a bit afraid that someday OXO won't make these anymore.
If your household likes ice cream, you'll be very happy with this ice cream spade.
