Good spices and style - poor quality letteringNov 29, 2007
By Matt Bowgren

My current problem with my spice rack is that the lettering is rubbing off. I've had this rack for about 4 months and the lettering on the lids just wipes off using a finger. This was actually a replacement set for an Olde Thompson set I had before where all of the lettering rubbed off on all of my jars. It seems that the jars are just poorly manufactured. Obviously, not having your spices labeled makes it difficult to quickly pick out your oregano from your parsley or italian seasoning mix etc... Other than that, though, the set is great and the spices are good quality. I have a customer service request in to see if they'll replace the lids as the lettering rubs off (as they say they will on their website) so I guess it shouldn't be a problem getting replacements, but just the idea that rub-off lettering is a standard issue is silly. They should have used a different printing technique for something that will sit near a stove and may get touched by oily or otherwise wet hands. It is a problem for all jars that have either white or black lettering on the lid.

Couldn't Cook Without It!Sep 02, 2007

This is a great addition to my kitchen. I use the spices in anything I cook. The only seasoning it doesn't have is salt and I use a separate salt grinder anyway! It spins so the spices are easily accessible, the names are clearly legible, and it doesn't take up too much space on the counter top. All in all I love it!

right look; wrong spicesDec 04, 2009

I was so excited when I received my spice rack; it's beautiful and convenient. However, the more I cooked, the more I realized that this is not a cook's spice rack. It lacks very basic spices (dill, tarragon, nutmeg, cloves, etc.) and includes spices I don't often (if ever) use (e.g. savory seasoning). The description didn't provide a list of spices, so I assumed it would be comprehensive. This is not the case, so I spent the money on the spice set and now have spent at least 5 times as much making up for its shortcomings.

GreatAug 29, 2008

There isn;t much to say but this is really perfect. I did my shopping on spice racks because I wanted something that looked great, worked well, was easily accessible, and had shakers that were not cheap and difficult to use. The shakers were the most important to me and they are great. Spices flow out very easily, but they dont pour out. It is perfect. The design of the shakers is also nice and they feel like higher quality. The size of them is also perfect. The way the rack turns is very free and doesnt get stuck or spin poorly like an old rack of mine. It is sleek and well designed and all the ingredients are easily accessible. My main problem is that you can not read the name of the spices from where they are positioned in the rack. So unless you know where all of the spices you need are by memory, or by looks, you might have to pull a few out to find basil instead of oregano or parsely. I even thought of getting a label maker and throwing labels on the top but I dismissed it because it would just look like crap.

Worth $20 MaxAug 19, 2011
By BookMaven I like the look of this spice rack, and I also like the look of the jars. However, neither the jars nor the lids are high quality. A couple of my glass jars had tiny bubbles, and the lids are plastic with a metallic paint coating and NOT made of stainless steel as they appear to be in the pictures. Definitely not worth the price tag Olde Thompson is selling this rack for, but I thought maybe this was because the spices are expensive...
Only, there aren't really any expensive spices included. Most of the jars are filled with easy-to-grow, dried herbs, rather inexpensive spices like cinnamon or rock salt (honestly, why would I need rock salt in a spice jar?? You can buy it in boxes for relatively cheap), and many things most people will never use (such as celery seed). Worse, at least three of the jars consisted of "mixes" that are essentially the herbs already included in other jars mixed together in different ratios. Spices l could have actually used like turmeric, allspice, or nutmeg are not present at all (perhaps because they would cost more per bottle than herbs or salt).
Finally, the lettering on the caps identifying the spices is printed on the caps in permanent black letters and cannot be rubbed off. I ended up replacing almost all the spices and covering up the labels with masking tape. NOT attractive, but couldn't really think of a more attractive way to make the rack work.
Honestly, I would be thrilled with this rack if they did not include any spices, let us label the jars with stick on labels or some such, and (as a result) cut the price in half. I would say $20 is a much more honest and reasonable price for a spice rack of this quality.
