Didn't lastJun 13, 2008
By Alan Scholl We enjoyed the peppermill for about a year, but then the grinder mechanism stripped out; too bad we didn't look at the Amazon reviews before we bought ours!
Regarding the top-output design, it is neat (no pepper on your counter or in your cabinets), but the lid is one more thing to juggle when you're cooking. Not a big hassle, but something to consider.
Now off to search for something better.

UPDATE 2: -------------------------------------------
I emailed the company with my picture of the stripped out part and they sent out a new one, with nice multi-color peppercorns and no questions asked!

This is the best you will find anywhereDec 29, 2007
By Kawakami I had a tough time finding salt and pepper mills that I liked because they fall into a strange gray area in kitchen devices. Most are either cheap-o plastic jobs that look... well, like cheap-o plastic jobs, or they're those 2 foot tall wooden chess piece lookin' things. I just wanted ones that looked nice, were normal sized for a dining table, and didn't require batteries.
This product fit the bill almost perfectly in every way.
Pros:
The mill looks great. The container is glassy instead of plasticy, and the brushed stainless top looks very nice.
The grinder is on the top instead of the bottom, and it has a metal cap to cover it. This means that the loose grinds don't fall out of the bottom and onto your otherwise clean table.
Contrary to the other review, the adjustable grider is perfect. Turn a little plastic knob on the grinder and you get powder fine grinds. At a more coarse setting you will of course get a mix of some fine and some coarse grinds, but that's pretty much how every grinder works.
Did I mention that this thing looks and feels great?
Cons:
The mill is just slightly too large for me. (It's about 2 times the size of a regular salt shaker you'd find at any given diner). It's not a big problem at all, but I would have liked it to be just a bit smaller.
As one review of the salt mill noted, the actual grinder doesn't look very attactive. The end of the screw that is the adjustment knob goes clear through the knob, so you see about an eighth of an inch of screw sticking out. Kinda weird since all they had to do was put the knob on the END of the screw and the whole thing would have been hidden. Again, this is not a make or break issue at all, and I only mention it for the purposes of full disclosure.
Note:
The salt mill and the pepper mill are not the same. The salt mill has some sort of ceramic-looking grinder and does not grind as fine as the pepper mill (which is chrome). I like my salt and pepper powder fine, so I just bought two pepper mills and filled one with kosher salt. Perfecto.

Great, sturdy, easy to clean and use/6 month later 2 out of 7 broke.Apr 19, 2008
By Trekkie I tried a bunch of different grinders of similar construction from other companies for my salt, pepper, cumin seeds and other spices. All of them either broke or gave me a carpatonal syndrome.
This mill is great with all my spices. It is easy to fill, easy to grind. Glass casing doesn't crack like plastic. Stainless steel grinding mechanism works perfectly.
*****This is written 6 month later*******
2 out of 7 grinders I bought - broke. The plastic where the grinding mechanism is attached snapped and now it just rotates freely, not able to produce friction, hence no grinding.
I kept 5 star rating because I still love the grinders and will buy more. When they work, they work well. Permalink | Why no voting buttons? We don't let customers vote on their own reviews, so the voting buttons appear only when you look at reviews submitted by others.

Plastic Part Breaks Time and Time AgainFeb 25, 2010
By MamaSue I have owned three of this model. One by one, they have all bit the dust. The internal grinder component is made of plastic and gives out in 8 or so months of use.

Great Customer ServiceNov 19, 2009
By M. V. Sanders Bought a set of the Bavaria salt/pepper mills less than a year ago at an outlet store, then another set online. Love the contemporary look, and the fact that the dispenser is on the top, so you don't have a mess on the table every time you set it down. Unfortunately, the plastic part that holds the grinder assembly broke on one of the pepper mills, a problem reported by others.
While I'm not especially happy about my mill breaking, I have to say that the Olde Thompson customer service is outstanding. Rather than simply ordering another one online, I decided to call the company. A real person answered the phone, and directed me to a real customer service rep who picked up the phone immediately. She is sending a Fed Ex call ticket for free pickup of the broken pepper mill, took my address, and is sending a replacement. THIS is old-fashioned customer service the way it should be.
