Not for all usesOct 08, 2003
I have owned a few OXO brand utensils over the past few years, and in general I have been happy with them. But I was disappointed with this spatula when the edge of the head melted the very first time it was used. The product description does warn you that it's only heat resistant to 250 degrees, but I was flipping eggs in a skillet, which I consider a basic use for a spatula. If it can't handle the heat of a hot skillet, than I don't think it's a useful spatula. Not to mention that it's neither healty nor esthetically pleasing to have bits of black plastic in your food!

Melted Edge Makes Spatula UnappealingMay 11, 2007

I'm in agreement with the other reviewers. The edge of this spatula has melted and I can remove the excess with my thumbnail. Yuck! This spatula was actually a free replacement for an older one that had done the same thing. (Oxo is very good about standing behind their products.) However, it is odd that they sent me something with the same innate flaw. I should have been told that ALL nylon spatulas will melt! They should discontinue making them or specify to be used ONLY where NO HEAT is involved. But what tasks would that include?

Great spatulaDec 10, 2008
By zuiko I have used a few of these for years and had no problem with them except when once I left one too close to the burner, which was my fault. As far as the 250 degrees thing, this spatula has no problem being used in much hotter pans so long as it doesn't get left in there. No spatula except an all steel one should be left in the oven or in a hot pan. Even in that case I can't see leaving it in there since it would just get too hot to handle. I use the spatula, then take the spatula out whenever I am done using it so I've never had a problem with melting. Any other nylon spatula which would do the same thing if exposed to high heat for a long time. That's why they don't make the pans out of nylon.
Some nice things about this spatula:
* it is a good size, not too small * head/handle are one piece (the cheapies are often multiple pieces which always come apart after a while) * perfectly stiff (which is what I want in a turner... I don't have much use for the soft flexible ones that flop around when you try to use it and bend under the weight of the food).

Pretty goodMar 07, 2004
By Sara Swihart I have a variety of OXO kitchen items and love them. When I bought my T-Fal cookset, it said to use nylon utensils so the non-stick coating wouldn't get damaged. I've used the nylon spoons and haven't had any problems. The edges of this turner melted a bit, so I bought some of another brand. The same thing happened. It is a problem with all non-metal turners that I've bought, so I guess it's not a big deal as long as the melted plastic doesn't get in the food.
Not What I ExpectedMar 03, 2012

This came in a set of utensils, and I have been using it (and the others) for almost 2 years now. I am pretty happy with the spoon(s), ladle, and pasta spoon/server, but I can't say the same for the two spatulas that came with it (including this one). The problem is the size. The blade is too thick. It's not that flexible either, which I don't think is a huge problem, but a little annoying when I try to turn things in smaller pans or fragile foods like an omlett. I think this is more suited to larger cookware or things like cookies. I do like how it stays rigid when I use it to help get a pizza out of the oven though.
It's made of dense nylon, which isn't a bad thing either. I own other nylon utensils and they're fine, but the spatula melted the second time I used it. I was using it to flip a pancake on my griddle, and when I turned the pancake over, I noticed that black pieces came off on it. I thought it had come off the griddle itself, but I noticed it was from the spatula. It had melted on the leading edge despite the griddle being cooler than 300 degrees.
On the plus side, the handle is really comfortable and grippy. I don't think I have ever dropped or had this slip out of my hands so far. The only issue with the fat handle is that it's hard to fit into a holder that has other things in it.
Overall, it's not a bad spatula. I recommend it, but be forewarned it might melt. I like Oxo products a lot and they are good quality. I was surprised that this one had some issues.
