At last, an easy to clean, easy to use garlic pressNov 04, 2003

I saw this garlic press when I was shopping for a new stockpot. One glance and i was removing it from the package for closer inspection, and sure enough it went home with me that day (even though I had to wait in line for 10+ minutes at Linens-n-Things watching another clerk folding towels instead of running the register!!)
This press mashes garlic into a paste with little effort. I have carpal tunnel problems and can manage this just fine. Multiple cloves, no problem, it can take one right anfter another. Then, wonder of wonders, the mesh screen pops right out and due to the non-stick coating, the garlic easily rinses off the press and the mesh screen. Five seconds more or less and you're done, it takes far more time to break a clove out of the garlic bulb.
My Susi Deluxe is on the way to the thrift shop, minus of course, the little plastic widget that one is supposed to use to clean the galic from the little holes. That was gone shortly after I purchased it, and instead I have to use a fork to poke the garlic shreds out of the press -- ick.
This will definitely go in my next basket of essential kitchen gadgets for the newlywed! As for mine, I'm hanging on to it for a good long while.
December 2007 update: I have just ordered a new press, after the nonstick coating on this press began to flake off. I am disappointed that the nonstick coating failed, and would reduce my rating if allowed.

UnusableJan 01, 2005

I bought this press several months ago and have finally given up on it. The holes are too small! When pressing garlic, more comes up around the top than through the holes.
Also, cleanup always includes poking a toothpick through the holes. My old zylzz went into the dishwasher and come out clean. This one takes 10 minutes to clean.
This is the first time I've ever been disappointed in an OXO product.

Didn't like itJul 16, 2005
By JKG Agreed with other reviews. Problems:
1. Holes too small, too much pressure to squeeze garlic
2. No tool to clean the holes on the press. The fact that it comes out makes it a bit easier, but still need a toothpick or something.
3. Because it took a lot of pressure to get the garlic through, I squeezed too hard and the screen broke in teeny pieces. So now I just crush and mince garlic with my french cutting knife.

Looks neat at first, but is a piece of junk.Oct 03, 2006

At first I thought this was a decent garlic press, but when the finish quickly deteriorated I began to have doubts. Then the screen shattered into tiny pieces without much effort while I was using it, sending shards of metal into my pan.
If you are into nice, long lasting objects and tools, this is not the garlic press you are looking for. If you are looking for a quick, inexpensive fix that looks "cool", then this might work fine.

Good Garlic PressJan 31, 2005
By New Yorker Being that there are so far only two reviews, one with one star and one with five, I wanted to help provide some middle ground.
This is surprisingly lightweight, and presses the garlic very nicely. It's very well-constructed and very comfortable to use. Yes, some garlic comes up from the chamber, but you just open it up, nudge it back in, and press it again and it all goes out the holes. The pressed garlic is a really nice chunky pasty consistency. The one problem with this: cleaning it requires a toothpick or a paper-clip to poke out the garlic that gets stuck in the holes.
