5Vita-Mix Makes Superb BlendersNov 26, 2007
By New England Yankee
My wife and I have two Vita-Mix blenders. We bought one at a fair 6 years ago, and picked up a new-in-the-box commercial model at an auction about 3 years ago. We have used both heavily. Vita-Mix blenders are tall (too tall to fit under typical kitchen cabinets), heavy, loud, and very, very effective. Like most, we've burned through any number of typical home blenders. The Vita-Mix blenders last.

Customer service is superb. We've had exactly one problem - the variable speed dial got really difficult to turn. With about two weeks go to on the original 5-year warranty (warranties have changed since - they're longer now), Vita-Mix fixed the base, including paying shipping both ways, and also told us to send along the container so they could make sure it was in good shape - and then replaced the blade for us.

Vita-Mix blenders come with a tamper, and a lid designed to take the tamper. Most of the time you don't need it. It comes in handy for very thick, very cold blends, like thick smoothies, ice cream, etc. You will absolutely, positively need to have a tamper - or stop and use a scraper - with ANY blender, no matter how powerful, the shape of the container, or configuration of the blades. "Tamper" is actually something of a misnomer. While it is used to tamp at times, it actually changes the mixing dynamics by effectively taking up part of the volume at the center of the container, eliminating cavitation in mixes where that's helpful.

The Vita-Mix base units are heavy because they use heavy-duty motors. Don't be taken in by competing companies' horsepower claims with lighter-duty motors with half the weight. The competitors hit higher horsepower ratings by running their motors at higher speeds. All blender motors run fast, of course, and bumping up the horsepower by pulling more amps this way can be appropriate for some motor applications, but you can't consider one factor in a vacuum. The Vita-Mix motors are heavy, and heavy motors last longer by using heavier cores and windings, both of which make the motor stand up longer to heavy use and heat without breaking down. Vita-Mix containers also employ a heavy flywheel below the blades. That, in conjunction with the heavier-duty motor, is what gives you longevity, and the ability to chop heavy stuff for years. If you look at the motor-to-container connector, you will also see that the Vita-Mix uses a larger diameter connector - less stress, more life, and lower possibility of stripping.

I do wish they were quieter, but the competitors are in the same ballpark, claims to the contrary notwithstanding. The height can be dealt with by simply storing the container away from the base (which we leave on the countertop). My only real complaint is the cost of extra containers. I'd love one of the 32oz containers, but think $100-$120 (typical price at a fair)is too much.

4Attention Smoothie LoversMay 18, 2007
By kitty pinkerton
This is my third blender after Waring Pro & Cuisine Art; I was never satisfied with the quality of frozen smoothies they produced -slushy or runny.... I found out that Jamba Juice uses Vita-Mix (commercial model)and decided to go with this brand.
According to Vita-mix costomer service, the difference between commercial model and this Pro model (home-use) is primarily the blade (thicker for durability), the moter is the same.
This blender makes healthy thick smoothies I always dreamed of!
The variable speed is useful for dry and wet food prep, although I won't use it for doughs...cleaning is nightmare.
I do wish it was smaller and looked nicer, therefore I am giving four stars.

5Great BlenderMar 15, 2009
By Keebler
As a fan of Consumer Reports, I had seen the Vitamix as their top rated blender, but could not swallow the high price tag. With that in mind, i bought the highest rated blender that was under $100. After having two different blenders die in the last 18 months, I decided to try the Vitamix with its 7 year warranty. I bought the machine based on expectations of improved durability; but I am amazed at the difference in performance. The ability to blend drinks made with large amounts of ice cubes to such a smooth consistancy is incredible. Very easy to clean and not too noisy. Nice to know that it is made in the USA too. The one word of caution is that it is large (taller than most blenders), so if you leave it on the counter (like I do), you need counterspace; it may not fit in the area under your cabinets.

5Harley Davidson of Kitchen AppliancesMar 17, 2007

This rare Made In the U.S.A. countertop appliance is the favorite of American Chefs in the restaurant trade. On par with other proud American products such as Kitchen Aid Stand Mixers, SubZero, Wolf Ranges,Harley Davidson motor cycles and Caterpiller tractors, this machine is built to perform and to last.

Literally speaking the machine performs well from soup to nuts. It grinds nuts into nut butters, makes hot soup without a heating element, purees baby food and smoothies. How about crushing ice or making salad dressing? Yes, and it also makes Frappacinos at your favorite coffe bar. This is the machine of choice for making margaritas or slushes in homes, bars and restaurants.

A favorite of country fair attendees for over 75 years it is available to the general public at fine retailers throughout the U.S.A. and at Amazon.com. At a time when most manufacturers of kitchenwares are moving production to Mexico or Asia, VitaMix continues to produce a sturdy, high-quality American product for the American market. Recently endorsed by the reknown Culinary Instituted of America as their countertop appliance of choice, this is built for commercial kitchens and is a superior home appliance for serious cooks.

4Good ProductApr 16, 2007
By Curtis R. Olinger
I have a subscription to Consumer Reports, they are NOT always right.

The Braun that won is a POS, the only reason it won was it had a very good sharp blade that dulls quickly, in the long run it will not last and its over 50 bucks everywhere I looked.

As with everything you get what you pay for, this is no different. Buy an American Product for once and remember that it wont be thrown away like the Piece of Crap throw away products we buy from China every day. If you ever visit someone in a foreign country, say spain, they dont have garages full of useless junk, they have a few very functional and quality things, thats the way I live as well.
