Would be a rip-off at half the price...May 14, 2008
By Avid Cook I bought this mushroom slicer because the wire egg slicers I had been using don't work very well on mushrooms (the wires end up stretching). I thought the individual blades on this slicer were a great idea, and looked forward to using this time-saving device. However, it turns out to have several fatal flaws in its design and implementation.
First, the "food-safe," "powder-coated" finish started chipping when I first washed it; this was mostly around where the blades attach to the handle, but from the looks of it, the rest will soon follow. Second, the blades don't go all the way through the mushroom, leaving the pieces all attached at the bottom; you have to reach underneath and pull the slices through the rest of the way to complete the slicing action, which seriously reduces this gadget's usefulness. Third, one of the blades bent the first time I used it (simply slicing through mushrooms!); I was able to bend it back into place (for now), but they should be much more solid than that. Finally, the little (ultra-thin) strip of metal that works as a spring to open the slicer is held in place by nothing more than two tiny indentations on each side of the handle; after the first use, the strip was bent in enough to cause it to slip right out. I bent it back the other direction and wedged it back into place, but it's obvious that this cheap design won't survive too many more uses.
At this price, you would expect a mushroom slicer to actually slice mushrooms without suffering damage. The box mentions a "guarantee," but provides no information on what that guarantee is or how to contact the company to offer them the opportunity to stand behind their product; for all I know, they may simply be "guaranteeing" that you're a sucker if you're willing to pay such a ridiculous price for a worthless gadget simply because it's German-made. I suppose that it is the made-in-Germany factor that purports to justify the hefty price of this slicer, but in reality it might as well be made in China.

JunkAug 18, 2008
By M. Poisot I bought this to quickly and evenly slice strawberries, mushrooms, etc. On the 5th strawberry one of the "knife blades" bent. On a strawberry! I bent the blade back but it was still slightly warped, and continues to bend every 10th item or so. Completely useless! If I were not so lazy I would have returned it.

One of my favoritesSep 23, 2008
By A. Willard I love this multi-tasker. I find it very useful for many food prep jobs -- eggs, mushrooms, strawberries, kiwi, banana slices, even cold butter. I don't put it in the dishwasher.

Owned For 10 Years!!Mar 24, 2011
By Grandma K I'm not sure of the exact year I bought this, but I've been using & abusing it it for a very long time! I am a kitchen gadget freak, but to stay in my drawer it has to be all kinds of great.
Let me list the ways I love this slicer!!
1. Quality -It slices everything I throw at it well. Strawberries, eggs, kiwi, mushrooms, etc. -It has a great finish. I put it in the dishwasher and it comes out beautifully. Unlike the Norpro Mushroom Egg Slicer (also sold on this site)which costs less, but tarnishes and turns your hands black. -The spring still works like new.
2. Durability -Did I mention I've had mine for about 10 years? One of my blades has finally bent...that's why I'm back for another...but 10 years seems like I got my money's worth in happiness with the product!
3. Usefulness -I've found I can use this for so many things, that when we go on the 2 timeshare vacations we take each year, this is one of the kitchen items I have to bring along. -One thing that makes me happy is cooking with the kiddos. Knives are a little scary, but with this they can slice things for me with virtually no supervision. Makes them feel pretty grown up and helpful..."Don't worry, Grandma. I can do this!"
4. Storage Friendly -It comes with a little 1" plastic sleeve that keeps it closed when not in use. Little design things like that make me happy! -It closes to about 1" flat and fits in my drawer nicely, and safely!
One of my favorite shower gifts for young brides is to buy a bunch of my favorite gadgets and attach tags with an explanation of why I love each one, all the ways I've found to use it, and then favorite recipes using the tools. This is one I include with a recipe for Annie's Fruit Salsa & Cinnamon Chips. You can find the recipe on [...]
Buy the slicer! Try the recipe! You'll love both!!
Mine is 30+ old and going strong.Mar 19, 2012
By E. Christina Dabis I've had the Westmark Champion mushroom slicer for 30-some years. Yes, the coating came off, however, that was my fault because I placed the aluminum item into the dishwasher, and as most know, that will discolor the metal immediately and permanently. I did know better, and it was completely my fault. It is not as beautiful as it was when it was new by any means.
However, it works perfectly. Sometimes there is an operator's error when I accidentally move the safety lever into engagement. Also, I have placed mushrooms that were larger than the device's opening and they jammed, of course. Now, I cut large mushrooms in half and then slice them.
This Westmark Champion Mushroom slicer is one of my very favorite kitchen tools. Admittedly, mine is nearly 30 years old, and the new appliance could be made differently, but I suspect with a 5-year replacement guarantee, the company is serious about quality.
