Before I bought this pie crust protector, I made my own protector from thin strips of aluminum foil, pieced together and perched precariously around the edges of the pie. They tended to slip off when I moved the pie into the oven and were not that great.
I bought this and have used it on a 9" pie plate. I left it on the whole time I was cooking the pie (65 minutes) and the crust came out perfectly browned, not burnt.
The protector was non-stick and cleaned up easily. It does get hot in the oven, so be careful.
Also, a nice touch is that the protector has two "notches" cut into it on opposing sides to allow it to fit snugly on a pie pan with handles.

This pie crust protector is feather light. It does a great job at preventing over-browning. Best of all, it's dishwasher safe. What more could you want?

The ring has a 10.5" diameter. The width of the silicone ring is 1 1/16" and the height is 1/2". I hope that helps. I used it to make a GF cornmeal crust apple pie in a Longaberger pottery pie dish. I am so glad I bought this crust protector. I was tired of cutting/tearing foil to fit. I recommend it. Clean up is easy too.

This 'protector' works quite well -- it is light enough that it does not disturb or deform the crust edge at all, but it definitely works to prevent over-browning of the edge. The flexibility makes it easy to store (folded) in a drawer, if a *little* tricky to remove from the pie -- must be grasped on two sides, and is difficult to 'feel' when you've got it in hand through a hot pad. And *do* use a hot pad: just because it's plastic doesn't mean it can't burn you!

I purchased this and used it on a standard 9" store bought crust, and it was just too big. The part it did cover didn't burn, but I will have to get one that is smaller to fit over the store bought crusts. At least I have one now for when I use a real pie pan.
