1simply doesn't deliver as picturedDec 24, 2009
By J. Franks
I purchased this set not from Amazon but from my local Michael's store - convinced by the packaging that it would be easy to make a presentable cake using their instructions.

Used two Duncan Hines cake mixes instead of recipe on box - packaging says you don't have to use their recipe so that seemed safe enough. Reading other reviews, it appears that may have been a bad idea, as the Wilton recipe is a stiffer batter. Box should have included notes to that effect.

As mentioned by another reviewer, the divider insert does not fit firmly at all - it should hook over the edges of the pan for better stability or something - even when I weighted the insert down with a soup can, pouring the batter in made it slide around and leak into other layers.

Lifting the insert out using the tabs per instructions was a mess. On the 2nd pan, I tried coating the insert with Pam spray first which helped a bit.

The tip about pouring your batter into pastry bag or ziploc bag to pipe into pans helped quite a bit and was a good tip.

Summary:
The pans themselves seemed fine, decent non-stick coating and handles make them easier to move in/out of oven. The insert fits loosely at best and is flimsy. I had to throw out the cake and make a standard layer cake instead because the batter did not in any way stay in the intended circles. Was a waste of $$ and will be donating to Goodwill, maybe someone else will have better luck.

2Bad pansFeb 24, 2011
By Another Darned Customer
I think having a kit to create a checkerboard cake is a great idea, but for a company that specializes in decorating, it seems odd that they included nonstick pans that have sloped sides instead of basic aluminum pans with straight sides. Wilton makes some nice cake pans but these aren't it. I would gladly pay extra for pans that are more appropriate to creating a three layer cake. Because of the pans being nonstick, it was very difficult to make the divider insert stay in place while adding the batter. I would not recommend this product to anyone wanting to make a nice looking cake.

2disappointing cake panNov 28, 2009
By B. Dickson
I was disappointed by the insert in this cake pan. It does not evenly fit the bottom or reach the sides properly so that it slides around when you try to put the batter in, creating a smeared layer effect. The pans themselves are a fine quality but it's really hard to work with. I've tried several times, with someone holding the insert to try and keep it from sliding and I've ended up with off-center, smeared layers and weird looking cakes. It would really work better if the insert clipped down to the pan. The plastic is too light and the batter "lifts" it as you put it in.

4Fun Pan SetNov 12, 2007
By E Hawley "elhawley"
I've only made a "candy corn cake" (found in the Wilton 2006 Cake Decorating Yearbook, pg. 42) so far, and it turned out pretty good. I made the cake from scratch, and the batter was thinner than a cake mix. The color rings weren't as exact as in the picture, but it still looked pretty good! I can't wait to make more cakes!

This cake set is easy to use and creates a real "wow" factor. If you properly prep the pans, the cake will come out easily. Use the recipe on the box; it will make the correct amount for all three pans. I've made several of these cakes for special events, and they never cease to amaze the crowd. Don't be put off by negative reviews, this cake set is awesome!
