1Bad product - bad companyApr 27, 2010

Can I give it 0 stars? I bought this product directly from Tribest to make goat milk yogurt and as soon as I got it, I gave it a try. I followed their instructions in the packet to the letter and after 10 hrs of incubation, I had warm and smelly milk, not thick and acidic at all. Thinking I did something wrong or that my yogurt maker wasn't working, I did another batch with another dairy free starter and this time, after 8 hrs., it came out beautifully. The yolife product says that it has a life of up to a year if stored in the freezer and when I looked at the lot code it was "012609" so I called the company to find out what that code meant and they said that it was the date it had been manufactured so when I told them that they had shipped me an expired product and that the cultures were obviously dead, then they said that the freezer life was 2 years (contradicting what their own package say) and that the incubation time can be of up to 24 hrs (again contradicting their package that says 8 to 12 hrs). I had never heard of such a long incubation period, I'd be afraid to eat that product as it may have gone bad with such long time. This product is completely unstable and the company that makes it unreliable. If you want a dairy free yogurt starter try "GI Pro-Health GI ProStart Yogurt Starter". Just a few dollars more than Tribest but completely worth the money. It produces a thick and creamy yogurt with just a small qty and the company customer service is excellent.

2UndatedJul 18, 2009

As a new Yogurt maker, I purchased this at the same time as my Tribest Yolife Yogurt Maker - YL-210. I purchased it because it contains 4 probiotics, and I wanted a good starter.

The combination of the two made "perfect" yogurt overnight. So why only 2 stars?

It clearly states on the bottle that this is a "dated" product. It is good for 2 months on the shelf or 1 year in the freezer. Like yeast, over time, the "live product" dies.

BUT it does not have any dating or batch numbers on the jar itself or on the box that it comes in!

When you receive this product you are unable ascertain or keep track of the age, and therefore the freshness, of the product. It would also be impossible for the seller to track the freshness, or to maintain the freshness without storing it in a freezer.

I love the starter, but until Yolife puts dating and/or batch numbers on the jars or boxes I do not recommend it.

1Very slow acidity developmentSep 23, 2009

Yolife Yogurt Starter. I used this product as a non-dairy based substitute for the starter culture that I currently use and was hoping for a direct replacement. By this I mean, a product that sets in 3-5 hours when using a soy-milk base. It did not meet my expectations. After several attempts and changing both the temperature of inoculating and incubating I cannot get ANY acid build-up.
The package indicated 10 hours incubating , but after that time there was noticeable development of off odours and still no pH drop. I will keep trying but don't expect much difference.

4Great ProductFeb 01, 2011

I have made at least 60 quarts of yogurt with this product and they are excellent. I incubate 1 quart skim milk at 100F and 1/4 teaspoon of the starter for about 8 hours and get the perfect yogurt. I have tried for 6 hours and get a sweeter product. At 12 hours it is very tart. I am not sure why others rate this so low. The reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I thought the product is a little pricey although when divided over 80 quarts of yogurt it is reasonable.
