Satisfying a scoop connoisseurSep 19, 2006
By R D We've been through 4 different ice cream scoops over the past few years, and haven't really been satisfied with one until now. This scoop is fantastic!
The stand-out feature for me is the ability to scoop really hard ice cream. We keep our freezer set at 0 degrees for food presevation, but premium ice creams are rock hard at that temperature. But I'm too impatient to wait for the ice cream to soften!
The zyliss has two features that make it better at scooping hard ice cream:
1. The shape of the handle -- this is a scoop that you can really productively bear down on. There's a nice edge to push against with your thumb, and the scoop is aligned so that a downward thrust is very effective at scooping. Many scoops fail by providing nothing to push down against (leaving one trying to grasp the handle very hard to hold on) or having a scoop that requires a sideways (instead of downward) scooping motion.
2. The "beak" of the scoop -- it's almost sharp, and helps cut through the ice cream and any embedded goodies. However, it's not pointy in the way that some are, and won't accidentally pierce the side of the container.
Now, it doesn't magically scoop hard ice cream- it still requires significant force. What's different is that this scoop actually lets one use a lot of force!
The only downside is that we've found it's not completely dishwasher safe. After several weeks of use, we started getting tiny corrosion spots in the scoop bowl. This has been true for *every* scoop we've ever tried, so we've resolved just to handwash it, which isn't a big deal.

Good design except CORROSION of scoopApr 14, 2008
By B. Speer Had two. Current one just like the first one is seriously corroded. Scoop surface appears to be chrome but not. If it is aluminum the anodizing breaks down. A different brand that was aluminum had the same problem. My guess is anodized aluminum not suitable.
Generally Zyliss makes quality kitchen tools. This has serious flaw. Wrote them and they offered a new one free if I sent the old one in. Not worth the time and cost. The corrosion is serious over time. Maybe a teflon coating?

The Cadillac of Ice Cream ScoopsAug 12, 2005
By Colleen M. Schneider Yes, this would be for the serious ice cream scooper. An ergonomic handle, in a choice of fab colors-among them orange and pink, a nice heft to it, and the ability to make perfect scoops that do not require a lot of effort to get the ice cream into your bowl. Very good quality and much more than I expected. This one is built to last! Highly recommend it!

Great ScoopFeb 27, 2006

I am very pleased with the scoop. It is sturdy, heavy and dishwasher safe. It does not cut through super-hard ice cream as well as it claims to, but it does a great job otherwise. We replaced a higher-end scoop (the kind with the chemicals in the handle that are supposed to soften hard ice cream) and we like this one even better.

Metallic surface wears awayMar 11, 2010
By woody I just added two images, so check them out. They show how poor the surface is. I own quite a few Zyliss products and after starting out as a big fan of them and having used them for a couple years, I've realized that some of the products, including this one are poor quality due to the cheap matte metallic finish that wears away with repeated use & washing. I always use scrubbers intended for non-stick pans, but this wear still occurs. And who knows what kinds of chemicals are in the cheap finish they use? Looks great out of the box, but they show their age before long. I notice this particularly on this scoop and on their garlic press. If Zyliss utilized the same design, but simply used stainless steel, I'd be thrilled and would give 5-stars. For comparison, their pizza slicer and peelers ARE stainless steel and are fantastic.
