New design limits versatilityJan 01, 2008
By T. Batdorff Zyliss, 10700, Easy Chop Food Chopper with Smart Base The Zyliss Easy Chop can chop and mince foods into the smallest of pieces with ease. The more you press, the smaller the pieces. Onions can be minced so finely that they are nearly undetectable by sight in sauces but still add desired flavor. And, onion odors are contained! The new design, however, means that I can no longer use the Easy Chop on my cutting board as I did with the older model. All foods must be inserted in the Smart Base before chopping. The rubber bottom on the Smart Base does help prevent slipping and reduces noise but I question how long it will last with repeated washings in the dishwasher. Only time will tell.

Easy to use chopperApr 02, 2007

I am pleased with my recent purchase of this item. Unit is super easy to take apart and clean. Very easy to use. One must bang top down hard (strong spring) to get proper rotation of items being chopped. The bottom part can be detached, filled with item to chop, reattach top and begin chopping. Easy, neat and compact to use. Pressing down on the top compresses tool which moves the choppers down into the lower section of the unit and when unit is fully compressed, the red slidder button will lock the unit in the compressed state for better storage.

Zyliss Food Chopper with Smart BaseDevice evenly chops w/o tearing, including meat, nuts, celery stringy veggies , onions and gNov 09, 2007
By D. Middendorf Zyliss, 10700, Easy Chop Food Chopper with Smart Base[[ASIN:B000V4PDYS Zyliss 10700 easy chop food chopper with smart base.]
Device evenly chops w/o tearing, including meat, nuts, celery (stringy veggies), onions and garlic; resilient black vinyl base is not cut by the blades; does great job directly on cutting board and equally well into the included storage container; disassembly is a breeze for easy cleanup; is dishwasher safe; locks in compressed position for compact storage; Swiss Zyliss quality despite China mfr.

Great ChopperAug 14, 2007
By Bronwyn Clear We have gone through and broken 2 other types of hand choppers in the last year. The plastic tends to break during chopping. This one is sturdy with thicker plastic. It is lasting quite well. If you don't want to use an electrical food processor and have small chopping jobs, this is the best by far.

Alien escapees from Area 51 diss ZylissFeb 19, 2012
By Cresence Eberle I bought this from Amazon two years ago and have been using it ever since. I thought it might be about time to write a review. And I prepped for that by reading some of the other reviews.
Some of reviewers clearly occupy a different universe than me. Maybe they escaped from Area 51 and are now hell-bent on worldwide domination of the kitchen utensils market. If I understand them correctly, this chopper is poorly designed, difficult to clean, hard to assemble, small in capacity, has a lock that gets gummed up, is not likely to last long...and one reviewer with a lot of votes even said you can only chop by using the Smart Base.
Bah! These people are nuts. Chopped nuts if you please.
Zyliss occupies a distinguished place in the small utensils market because its designs are effective and attractive, construction is solid, and prices are reasonable. This chopper is all of those things, and I've got two years of experience with this chopper to back me up on this point. I have used the chopper regularly to chop garlic, onions, meat, olives, mushrooms, and other such items. I don't use it to chop tomatoes because that seems patently silly, and also because it's easier to buy canned diced tomatoes. Anyway, here are some specific reflections:
1. I have never used the Smart Base. It's there somewhere in my cupboards, but I just tend to pile up choppable items on my Oxo cutting board and serially chop through the piles. Doing it this way makes it easy to go hrough a number of piles very rapidly.
2. To the one person who hinted that this might damage cutting boards: nope! You're wrong.
3. After two years of solid use, the chopper overall is still in essentially new condition. The Z-blade is still sharp, or at least as sharp as it ought to be (these things are not guillotines, nor should they be).
4. Disassembling the chopper is easy. Running it through the dishwasher is even easier. Cleaning is a breeze.
5. Reassembling the chopper does require that you be able to fit a plastic cover over the Z-blade. This requires some capacity for eye-hand coordination. If you can work with Legos, you can probably manage this. If not...well, good luck. You probably shouldn't be in the kitchen at all.
6. I won't go so far as to say that the person claiming a gummed up or faulty lock is delusional...but that's just not true, unless you clean your chopper by dipping it in pancake syrup and then putting it in the freezer. The lock is solid, easy to use, and quite functional.
7. The Smart Base does have a limited capacity, but since I don't use it, capacity is not a problem for me. These choppers can only get so big before they lose their functionality. This chopper is sized just right in my opinion.
Would I buy this again? Darn right I would! Would I consider it a good gift for others? Yup! This thing is excellent. Don't let the sourpuss remarks deter you, not even if they come from people with a lot of votes.
