Excellent beginner mandoline!Oct 22, 2010
By Lin Ennis
"Writer, Business Owner"
I just bought this after reading lots of Veggie Venture recipes that use a mandoline. I love it! I've used it for almost every meal I've prepared since buying it.
PROS
* Blades are VERY sharp; will even slice tomatoes and celery!
* Slices paper thin - which I love for onions!
* Has four-pronged food pusher good for food at least an inch across (use plastic edge of pusher to finish the last slice)
* Rinses clean easily; no staining even with beets
* Stacks together to keep all blades with mandoline
* Feet stand on cutting board or grasp edge of bowl
* 2 grater blades (medium and small), and 2 slicer blades (thin and ultra thin)
* Relatively inexpensive, considering some mandolines cost over $100!
CONS
* Blades are VERY sharp (after several nicks, including fingernails, I sliced off the tip of my thumb - surgically clean cut! ) Actually, you don't want blades less sharp, but it seems important to point out as with most things the strongest point can be the weakest point under certain circumstances.
* Food pusher doesn't work well on small pieces, such as baby carrots (how I sliced my thumb...going superfast - by hand - making carrot slices one could see through!)
* Food pusher can seem to jam; though it's just running down a track, mine shows a little wear after a couple weeks
* If pusher slides passed the veg and you re-grip it, the veg gets lots of prong-punctures; would be better to have more prongs, closer together, and maybe not as thick or long?
* Grating seems harder than slicing...beets require focused pressure because grater slots are thin metal, not serrated or blade-honed
* Blades are fixed; you just choose one and that's it, but hey, it's inexpensive
TIPS
* Don't try to save the little blade protectors which I believe are part of the packaging. Instead, snap both blades onto the base for storing, then snap grater pieces and pusher on top to protect hands when rooting around for it (if you ever put it away since it's so handy!)
* To slice something round - like radishes, beets, even onions - run the veggie across the blade by hand once or twice to create a flat edge; then switch to the food gripper/pusher
* If you insist upon holding the food by hand, go very, very slowly and evaluate the distance of your hand from the blade with each slice, or review your insurance policy
* When you finish one food, turn mandoline over and remove bits stuck to the bottom
* Rinse parts immediately and drain dry

Nice compact designJan 17, 2008

I was skeptical when I received this slicer/grater, but it really does a nice job. There are two slicing blades, each with a snap on guard for storage, and two different graters. The different blades/graters are easily changed and cleaned. I do notice some staining of the white plastic by some vegetables (red cabbages, sweet potatoes), but that doesn't really bother me. Everything snaps together for storage, too, so you don't have to chase down attachments. A very nice kitchen product.

Zyliss GraterSep 20, 2008
By L. Garron For compact use this rates a 4. However, for grating and slicing I find a hand held grater and knife still work better. The interchangable plates concept is terrific, however, the plastic knob used to hold the food under the sliding top (ie too be used to protect fingers)is useless. Unlike the pressure one uses when hand grating, the sliding plate and knob pressure is too great. Everything turns to mush. I find it easier to use this grater the old way. Manually. Just watch the fingers.. it is sharp.

Better Than A Mandolin SlicerJul 01, 2009

I have owned a mondolin slicer and found it frustrating. I wanted something better and purchased this after reading the reviews. One reviewer complained about the sharp pin in the middle of the holder. This makes it perfect IMHO! It really grabs onto hard veggies like carrots. Nothing slides loose while grating or slicing.
It is really easy to snap the different blades in and out. This makes for easy cleanup. All of the parts nest together for a compact and neat storage.
Very happy I purchased this.

Excellent slicer/graterOct 08, 2008
By J. Emmet This is an ingenious slicer grater. Saves space in the drawer and multi-tasks. I've sliced onions paper thin. The handle only works if the item isn't too bulky or round, but hasn't presented a problem. Easy to use and clean. I've bought two now!
